The Uses of Clear Tape
What Are The Common Uses of Clear Tape?
Clear tape comes in a variety of sizes and formats, in turn offering all manner of uses.
One of the most popular applications for clear tape today is packaging. Given the huge increase in online shopping over recent years, it is no surprise that the need for packaging tape has also risen steeply as merchants find themselves boxing up and dispatching more and more of their products.
Whilst brown tape remains a popular choice for packaging, clear tape is also available specifically for this purpose. 50mm rolls offer the necessary width and robustness required to wrap parcels effectively, and also can be used in conjunction with tape dispenser guns for ease of application. The major advantage of clear tape over brown tape is that markings on parcels (such as delivery instructions, product information and customer addresses) are still visible once it has been applied.
Aside from commercial packaging, clear tape remains the most popular product for wrapping gifts. In these situations a narrower tape (typically 24mm) is used, such as the original Sellotape, often with a dispenser - two hands are never quite enough when wrapping presents and being able to tear off clear tape with one hand whilst holding the wrapping paper in place with the other helps massively!
Clear tape is also useful for repairing items in the home, garden, school or workplace. Some clear tape products are designed for this purpose, offering super-strong adhesion and resistance to moisture and other weather conditions. The clear tape will remain invisible once applied, ensuring the repaired item looks as good as new.
There are literally thousands of other uses for clear tape, including mounting, envelope sealing, craft work, even removing fluff and bobbles from your clothes! Clear tape is a truly essential item that everyone should have stowed away in a drawer at home or in the office.
How is Clear Tape Made?
Components of Clear Tape
Clear tape is a type of pressure sensitive tape. Pressure sensitive means that it sticks to a surface when pressure is applied - there is no need for water or heat to make it adhesive.
Clear tape comprises a flexible backing that is generally coated on one side (although double sided tape is available) with a sticky adhesive.
The materials used to make the backing of the clear tape vary depending upon the use. Heavy duty packaging tapes are usually made using polypropylene, whereas more general use tape is manufactured using cellulose. The adhesive element of the clear tape will be either rubber/resin or acrylic-based.
With today's focus firmly on the environment, industry leader Sellotape now obtains its cellulose film from natural wood pulp derived from sustainable forests. This regenerated cellulose is fully biodegradable, and therefore much kinder to the environment.
